In this episode, Haruto continues to search for Manami and Gnome who disappeared during their last battle. And also, what is Manami’s secret that causes her to become a swindler?
The episode starts with a heartbroken Wajima, Shunpei, and the Worker babbling about Manami being a swindler and Rinko said that all men a shallow (GRRR…..). Anyways, the heartbroken guys are tearing apart the stuff that they bought from Manami, and Wajima was just about to crush the ring that he planned to gave it to her! The ring, which Haruto thought is a Smoke Ring, is actually Smell Ring. Just like the Sleep Ring, whoever wears it will have the effect on the user (pretty much all the Wizard Rings affect the user only) and this Ring will cause the user to emit a very awful stench……… so stinks that even the heartbroken guys halted because of it!
As for Yamagata, he knew that Manami is a swindler, because a beautiful woman like her would only be interested to a man that has a lot of money. But he doesn’t mind it, because he knew that Manami has a good heart. Proof of this is when Gnome attacked them earlier, instead of running away or scream out for help, Manami instead held Yamagata’s hand, which shows us that just because she did some bad things, she’s not a bad person.
Manami’s reason for swindling is also revealed, it appears that when she was little she used to live in a house with her family (and a Shiba Inu ^_^ ). But one day her father got tricked by a swindler and they couldn’t afford to stay in the house anymore. But he promised that he will get it back one day but he passed away before it could happen, so Manami decided to carry on and do it herself. Man, talk about karma! Also, I wonder what happened to that cute Shiba Inu? Hehehehe.
However Gnome managed to track her, and attacks her in her cheap apartment. One thing to note about the Phantoms is that Phoenix this time is pretty serious as a chief, because he usually goofs around. Guess he got tired that they keep failing.
Luckily due to Rinko being a detective, Haruto managed to track Manami and fights Gnome. The fights continues to impress me. I love how Wizard keeps using his Flame Defend to burn anything to protect in order to protect himself. Also, Rinko this time proves to be a very useful ally. I’m impressed that she did something that is connected to her job, in this case she use her skills and connections as a detective to quickly found out about Manami.
As Gnome retreats again, Manami tells Haruto that the house means a lot to her, because it is where she has the beautiful memories of her spending time with her parents. At this time it is also revealed that Haruto is also an orphan, something that interest me due to they finally starting to give a glimpse of Haruto’s past.
Moving on, Gnome burns down the house that Manami wants to buy, in hopes to bring her to despair. What is the most amazing thing about this episode is that Manami is the very first Gate that didn’t fall into despair despite having suffered so much! I mean, she’s probably heartbroken about people knowing that she is a swindler, and definitely heartbroken about her loss of family, and now a Phantom burns down the only thing that can give her hope! People who suffered this much could’ve easily fall into despair, but not Manami! She keeps going on normal, despite being sad. Maybe it’s because they want to save the budget for the Underworld scene though.
The final fight with Gnome is less impressive than the previous fight, but it is interesting. Also the fight marks the first time that Wizard puts a Ring on a Phantom’s hand to give it’s affect to the Phantom! In this case, the Smell Ring is used to block Gnome’s sense of smell, because he can smell Wizard even if he’s underground. While this method is a bit hard to do, and I think that they wouldn’t do it often, it’s nice to see it. Also it appears that when Wizard uses the Kick Strike Ring, he can also add another Ring to add more effect, in this case, Drill Ring! When you combine these two Rings, then you’ll get Fourze’s Drill Kick!
With Gnome defeated, Manami decided to turn herself in, but Yamagata arrives and tells her that he will buy the house, and will sell it to her in the future. I don’t really know what are the effects, maybe she could get a massive discount or this is Yamagata’s move to have her date him. But regardless, now Manami still has hope to reclaim her house, knowing that she is one step closer into getting it.
Meanwhile, Phoenix go berserk because of the constant failure caused by Wizard. This could led to the part where the Chief Phantoms are finally taking on Wizard.
Overall, an okay episode. But the last episode is slightly better because of its action scenes. Like the last episode, you shouldn’t really be paying your attention to this because it’s a filler. But it did gives us some hints of the future, particularly Haruto’s background and the Chief Phantom’s rage on Wizard.
